My Students

I teach an exciting, motivated, and creative group of fifth-grade students. My student population is very diverse. I have some who are working below grade level, while others need to extend their thinking and apply the skills they have mastered in meaningful ways.

My students enjoy coming to school each day and learning from each other.

They use their critical-thinking skills to ask good questions and analyze information. They want to know about our community and how they can have a positive impact on it.

My Project

We live in sunny Southern California and solar power is really catching on. The use of solar power has inspired my students to ask questions like, do you think one day solar energy will power a car? To help my students learn about solar energy I am requesting seventy-two 6-in-1 solar robot kits. With this kit my students can make a variety of robots, such as a car, a dog, a plane, and a windmill, that are powered by the sun. Each student will be able to choose 2 designs to build and then they will compare the efficiency of each design. In doing this, they will begin to see how solar energy can be used to power our future. I am also asking for 2 futons to place in the classroom. These will provide students a place to meet and put their heads together as they compare data from their solar robot experiments.

The sun is a renewable resource and this project will inspire my students to think of new and exciting ways to use this energy.It is important that my students begin to see how important alternative energy sources can be so that they can help create solutions for tomorrow.
