My Students

It's hard to calculate the number of atoms in 12 grams of water without a calculator! Chemistry is a quantitative science. In our school, many students cannot afford their own calculator or buy the batteries needed to run them. One possible solution: a classroom set of solar calculators!

My students are largely African American in an urban area.

They struggle with outside influences such as being latch key children, gangs in the area, and absent caregivers. The school is a haven for them to learn, study, and feel safe. The students are eager to learn. But there are sometimes not enough resources for them. They live in a low income area and cannot always furnish all of the supplies they need.

My Project

I want my students to learn Chemistry. However, chemistry is full of math. It's hard for students to learn the chemistry concepts when they are so busy working out the answers by hand, or worse, using their cell phones. With a calculator for each student, they won't be distracted or worried by the math in chemistry. And by using a solar calculator, we don't have to worry about battery replacement. Students can use these calculators nearly every day. These calculators will save them time so that they can focus on the chemistry concepts and calculations. I teach the students math is a tool we use in chemistry and using these calculators I can show students the importance of chemical calculations.

These calculators are an important tool in learning chemical concepts.

For low income students, a scientific calculator is an expense they cannot afford. Math classes furnish calculators for math class. But science classes are low on the list for schools to provide calculators. These calculators will be available for students to use for chemistry for years to come.
