Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a second-year Special Education teacher in the South Bronx. My first year I had the chance to teach a self-contained Earth Science class with 11-12 (1 left and 1 came during the school year) students that I loved to teach. Self-contained means that every student in that class has some kind of learning the difference (I do not call them "learning disabilities"). Because of the various learning differences and it being my first year teaching, this class is now a two-year tracked class for Earth Science which means I get this wonderful group of kids this coming school year for part two. It also means I will have a second self-contained class of bright-eyed 9th graders too!

With kids that learn differently than general education students, you have to focus on each of their strengths and assist with each of their weaknesses.

In order to do this effectively, I have to make my curriculum accessible for all my students and one of the most effective ways to do that is through technology. All of my lessons try to incorporate reading, writing/typing, videos, audio, drawing, and discussion. My students thrive in this kind of learning environment!

My Project

Providing access to technology is a key component of any classroom, but especially a special education classroom. Students in my classroom have a variety of learning differences, both strengths, and deficits. By incorporating multiple representations of the content, I can better ensure that most of the students are getting access to the material.

In addition, my school and my classes have a large percentage (our incoming freshmen class is almost 50%) of English Language Learners.

Almost all of them speak Spanish and unfortunately (and surprisingly) most of my curriculum does not come translated. The Espanol license for BrainPop will make our science content even more accessible for those students in particular!

Providing my students with technology and a material like BrainPop keeps them active in the classroom and engaged in learning. The headphones help them concentrate during independent work time and really help some of my students who have certain learning differences maintain focus and attention.
