Help Mrs. Norsworthy

Playing catch is therapeutic, just ask any 'old' kid. It's time we caught up to the past and teach our students what was second nature to us in our youth--playing ball.

We can play Mountain Ball and Line Ball and Frizz Ball and Kick Ball on the ball diamond. But we can't play REAL BALL. We have so few gloves that students actually believe they catch better bare-handed. There are just not enough opportunities to become skilled at catching with ones non-throwing hand. Academically, throwing, catching, and batting engage visual tracking, depth perception, the physics of force, angles, parabolas, intercepting points, and determining the high percentage play. Learning sport through physical education includes building character: cooperation, tolerance, acceptance, encouraging others, perseverance, doing one's best and leadership.

My students need baseball gloves to learn to catch with one's non-dominant hand. The time is ripe. A local business refurbished the baseball diamond at one school in our district this summer. A tribute to their generosity would be to organize teams of 4th-6th grade students at each school and play weekly games on our new diamond.

America's favorite pastime continues to bring so many families together. Grass stains from' sliding into base, the thrill of spanking a ball and snagging one out of the air--with your help, these skills and joys of the REAL game can be REAL experiences.
