My Students

Our elementary school is a diverse school in an urban community that serves students from many backgrounds. Each child brings with them unique strengths and needs. They are inquisitive and enthusiastic, and come to school ready to learn every day!

My fourth graders haven't had a "normal" school year since they were first graders.

They have been resilient and have adapted beautifully to a quick shutdown, a global pandemic, remote instruction, and hybrid learning. Despite their perseverance in these difficult times, social interactions and acclimating to the school day can present challenges.

My Project

The concept of a "soft start" is that students can choose simple activities to complete independently or with peers to have a gentle start to their day. Choice promotes student engagement, and having a more relaxed way to begin a routine can help decrease anxiety or stress.

Having these materials to implement soft starts will allow my students a calm, social way to begin their days.

I am requesting materials that students love, including Legos, building sticks, and brainteasers. These can be completed by students on their own, if they'd like a way to quietly decompress before starting class. They can also be a way to engage with peers, develop new friendships, and persevere when challenged. As we reenter a more typical year, ways to develop strong social-emotional skills and strategies will benefit all students.
