My Students

My students come from a variety of ethnic and economical backgrounds. Some children come to Kindergarten with a solid PreK experience, while other children come to school with no experience or foundation. It is my job to create a cohesive classroom environment that is both nurturing and engaging. One way that I hope to do this is with "alternative seating" (also called "flexible seating").

Alternative seating is becoming a new trend in education, and I hope to use it in my own classroom.

Currently, my students spend most of their day in chairs or on our large classroom carpet. I would like to offer them alternate seating options. These include: large pillows, bean bag chairs, backpatter's seats, reading pillows, and bucket rockers. I would love to see my students use these seating options when working in stations and in small groups during the day. Alternative seating also allows for more movement and flexibility. It gives students more freedom and choice. What is comfortable for one child may not appeal to another.

My Project

Donations will help offer my students alternative seating options on a daily basis. These seating choices-- from bean bag chairs and big pillows to backpatter's chairs and wobble chairs-- will allow my students more flexibility and movement when they work at learning stations.

Kindergartners inherently crave movement, and flexible seating options allow them more opportunities to move and explore their environment.

Alternative seating also allows me to extend learning past the classroom carpet and desks. Many Kindergarten classrooms are required to spend more and more time on academics, which allows for less time for unstructured play experiences. Because of this, teachers must find creative ways to allow for movement and play. In my classroom, I use learning stations that often incorporate games and movement. Flexible, alternative seating would further my goal of keeping play and movement in the Kindergarten environment.
