My Students

I am a school psychologist who does counseling with elementary school children ranging in age from 4-12. Over the 18 years that I’ve been at my school, I have encountered many different children experiencing a variety of social/emotional issues such as divorce, death/illness, depression, anxiety, and bullying. Unfortunately, many of these children lack the ability to navigate and cope with these feelings, sometimes resulting in behaviors that interfere with their learning.

By guiding children through challenging emotions, they are better able to connect with peers and adults and are more available to learn in school.

My Project

Children often need help managing their emotions and navigating difficult situations. A social/emotional library would help me support the students at my elementary school who are struggling emotionally. Books would address how to manage feelings associated with the death of a loved one, divorce, anxiety, sadness, bullying, and acceptance of those who are different. This library would also be open to staff who are unsure how to best support those dealing with difficult feelings and experiences that may be interfering with social relationships and academic performance. Books are an incredible way to reach children who may be feeling alone and confused as they can help them process and cope with complex emotions and connect with characters in similar situations.
