My Project
As a public school school social worker, my team and I provide essential services to students. These include weekly individual and group sessions with students to support them in their emotional and social skills. In addition, we provide crisis intervention for all students in our building. At our school, we collaborate with 7th - 12th grade students. Our students' needs are diverse! The areas for growth range from emotional, developmental, psychological, social, and academic.
Our English Language Learners (ELL) Students are struggling to feel understood and emotionally safe in an English-driven building.
To create a comforting, safe space my coworkers and I want to transform our window-less office space, and therefore our sessions. The students benefit greatly from a room that feels welcoming and has been thoughtfully created based on their individual needs. For example, the word wall will help students identify keywords they can use to transition throughout the building. They will feel more seen, welcomed, and appreciated by having their language centered in the social workspace. The variety of tactile toys such as the use of nee doh, will be available during sessions and for their in-class use to aid with symptoms of anxiety, overstimulation, and attention-deficit. The UNO cards will provide a familiar game to use as a conversation starter or tool to keep students engaged during difficult conversations. Finally, the door sign will help to protect student's privacy and confidentiality to avoid interruptions and uninvited guests into sessions.
