This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I've found that it's getting harder and harder to keep my Special Education Social Studies students engaged with content, and evidence demonstrates that middle schoolers tend to check out 6 minutes into a lesson! (Barakat, 2016) As a parent of middle schoolers myself, I have seen how engaged and invested students are with TikTok, which makes a lot of sense given that they were born into the age of the tweet, YouTube and on demand streaming entertainment.

Lately, I have been using minute-length Tik Toks related to the day's learning target as a hook right before the warm-up and it has been very successful, but it's hard to find reliable, quality content related to all of our objectives, so I want to create the videos myself!

Before I taught middle school, I designed and taught a successful College Readiness curriculum for formerly incarcerated students at CUNY and during the pandemic, I used Camtasia and Snagit to create engaging video content and remote learning lessons for my students. Unfortunately, the NYC DOE does not offer Camtasia licenses to teachers, and I no longer have access to my CUNY license since I transitioned to middle school. Therefore, I am requesting Camtasia and Snagit (video editing and screen capture software) to create engaging Social Studies video content for my amazing Special Education Social studies middle schoolers in East New York.
