Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach wonderful, inquisitive Pre-K children in a high need community. They are learning more and more about themselves everyday. They are now ready to learn about others and the world all around them.

Social studies is a very important thing to learn early on. In Pre-K we begin learning about ourselves and understanding our feelings, wants, needs, traditions, and culture. This is a strong basis for understanding and respecting others in the world around us. Our class needs books and materials to help children truly understand early social studies concepts. Through multisensory approaches, our young Pre-K students can learn about where people live and come from (maps, geography), their traditions and cultural celebrations (holidays, family trees, cooking), and how people in the past have changed the world (history). Our class currently has minimal materials to teach these concepts and we desperately need more. Please help!

For the different learning styles of our class, we need the following materials: a talking globe, a computer game filled with social studies concepts, a boardgame helping us learn facts through fun, a cd of Martin Luther King's amazing speeches, a dvd of how holidays are celebrated around the world and how people communicate in different ways (sign language), a vegetarian cookbook so we can cook multicultural meals, beginner biography books, books about holidays, books about maps/globes and books about where we live. These materials will help our children learn more about themselves and about others. It will increase their cultural awareness and teach them to respect other people's differences while being proud of their own.

Your help will ensure that my students have all the materials they need to learn social studies. The variety of supplies will ensure that children with different learning styles can succeed in learning important social studies concepts through a variety of fun, engaging activities.
