I teach freshmen and A.P. senior English Language Arts. I also run a mentoring program, where seniors mentor freshmen. We are a high needs school that suffers from budgetary constraints and logistical guidelines. In the past, I have taught Invisible Man, but it never has the impact that I crave. This year I tried something different. I decided to change books and read Schuylar's "Black No More" in juxtaposition with Dr. Seuss and his political writings. In this unit we not only read Schuylar's book, we also researched the leaders satirized in the book to determine historical context. The students completed a side project on one of Dr. Seuss' "childrens" books that addressed the social and political issues of Seuss' time. They had to analyze the historical context and current relevance and create a project. They created songs, games, children's books, performances, etc. Then they presented their projects to their mentees, families, and community. I have never seen a class so interested in a unit. They all completed their projects with pride and helped to educate their community on political and social issues. I presented their work at the F.E.S. National Conference and they won first place in Mentoring because of it. It was an amazing experience that we will always treasure. So, what's the problem? To order books for the curriculum, the book needs to be in a certain catalogue, which it is not. We really don't have the money to take from another department. Last year I asked the students to buy the books, but some couldn't so it was problematic. They were embarrassed, and I felt compelled to help. It was hard to take that financial burden. I'm looking for a class set that I can reuse over and over. Black No More is hard to find, and not easily available in all libraries and bookstores. This is not just a book, it's an experience. You can make a difference in a school that so desperately wants to learn and grow, but is unfortunately lacking resources. Seuss' last message he gave to his biographers before his death was, "We can and we've got to do better than this". Now is your chance.
