Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from an area of the highest poverty. This group of students are all freshman. They are entering the next chapter of their lives and need some help to make it memorable. Many of these kids come from hispanic background and have experience some type of traumatic experience in their lives. School has been an important social outlet for them to allow them to let some of their problems go and work with other to overcome.

Our school has been losing students and as a result funding, not allowing me the opportunity to readily provide resources to my students.

Because of the loss in funding, as a teacher, I am working hard to fundraise for my students to have opportunities in the classroom they did not think were possible.

My Project

Many of my students are exposed to social media on a constant basis. Last year, our school went through a social media ordeal dealing with a new anonymous app. This app allowed many students to post defaming pictures and comments and remain completely anonymous. As a result many kids felt the effects of cyber bullying. This led myself and many of my colleagues to work with our students and provide lessons on cyber bullying and the effects social media has on our lives. I find it important to start with the freshman to work to prevent this situation from happening again.

This book shows my students how social media can negatively affect you at any given moment in your life.

My students and I will be reading this book as a class. We will constantly be reflecting on what we read and relating back to the experiences my kids have already had to deal with in their lives. This resource will allow me to not only work on reading and writing with my freshman, but give them some real world lessons. I am hoping this eye opening book will caution my students as to what they post on social media and show them these things do follow you.
