Social Justice Warriors: Engaging with Society Through Reading

Help me give my students the books they need and cherish. When living in poverty, the choice between a novel and a meal is an easy one to make. Let's not force children to make that choice.

My Students

My students represent the nations in the Caribbean, Africa, and the Middle East, but they live in the heart of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Some are second or third generation immigrants, while others are brand new to the country and just learning English. All of them are bright and eager to learn.

My school is devoted to providing our students with the resources they deserve, but we are a struggling Title I school.

We are always in need of books for our students, who have limited access to books and as a result have a hard time both with decoding and with comprehension. For this reason, students need to be able to carefully annotate their novels and develop a love reading.

This year, I have the pleasure of teaching the entire 6th grade, and collaborating with Ms. McFarlane in teaching the entire 7th grade. This means we will need a whole lot of books this year! In addition to working with two whole grades, we will be adding novels to our curriculum. Joining our much loved Jaqueline Woodson and Walter Dean Myers books, will be Ibi Zoboi's brilliant American Street and Jerry Spinelli's charmingly off-beat Stargirl.

My Project

If you have kids, you know they can get pretty expensive pretty quickly. That's why it's so important that as a teacher I provide as much as I can to support my students and their families. While many of us can drop $30 at the bookstore for the entire year and barely feel it, that just isn't the case for students living in poverty.

In supporting this project, you are ensuring that myriad cultures, religions, and lifestyles are embraced and valued in school.

You are ensuring that 120 kids have access not only to books, but to the stories that reflect the joys and challenges these kids experience in their day to day lives.
