Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Bronxdale is a new school that services a diverse racial and ethnic array of students. Most students qualify for free or reduced lunch. We follow an ICT integration model, so we have a variety of reading levels.

My school offers an after school club to encourage reading. I am able to recommend comics to students based on their interests and backgrounds. Reading is fundamental to all subjects and domains. Reading in any form will benefit students. Comic books are a highly accessible source for both educational and leisure reading. Included in the list are differentiated materials such as adaptations of Shakespeare and the story of the Civil Rights Movement. Furthermore, students' created this project, chose the books, drafted and edited their own responses.

In Their Own Words

"We in comic book club feel its important to build a community that will easily connect and relate to each other. Its important to read different types of genres and other forms of literature. It lets people become introduced to new diverse and interesting characters along with a variety of stories. It allows students to let their creativity grow and share their knowledge with other students. Reading comic books will help us better understand story structure and talk in depth about the many stories that we have analyzed throughout our time in this club. We can apply these skills in our English and writing classes.

I am the co-founder of comic book club. Me being the nerd that I am, I always reference comic books in my classes, whether it be for Math, English, or Science. I have noticed that when I make a reference I always go in depth to what I said or wrote down. For example, if me and my classmates are having difficulties I would put it in terms they would understand by referencing the Avengers or Spider-man (I know it seems impossible but I always find a way). My goal as a student at Bronxdale and a member of comic book is to become more fluent in reading. Comic book club to me is a way to work on my goal and talk to other people who also share the same interest in comics."
