I am a first grade teacher in Los Angeles. Approximately 60 percent of the students at our school are African American, about 30 percent are Latino, and the remaining 10 percent are a mix of Pakistani, Ethiopian, Anglo American and others. I always have many talented children in my classes, and I am always looking to expand the educational program I deliver.

Books are the foundation of education. We all know this. It is a sad fact that students in America do not have adequate access to them. The more exposure children have to quality literature, the richer their lives will be. This is obvious. Yours will be an invaluable gift.

This collection of books will provide invaluable support to the goal of teaching children to have compassion for others, to appreciate their own good fortune, and ultimately to act against all forms of social injustice. Many of the titles have received awards; several appear on the Amelia Bloomer Project list of feminist books for youth. All of the titles deal with discrimination, human rights, poverty, or other social justice issues. Your generosity will help my students celebrate diversity, understand more about social injustice and what to do about it, and will help them to learn to read as well. A true bargain!

It is always a great pleasure for me to see students engaged in lessons that have real meaning for them. The books that you provide will form an important part of the meaningful, culturally relevant curriculum that I strive to deliver. Rest assured: your donation will make a real difference.
