My Students

My students are enrolled in a 50/50 Spanish dual-immersion program, where they receive 50% of instruction is Spanish and 50% of instruction in English every day by two different teachers. I will be working with roughly 48 students who are all of diverse backgrounds, and aiming to become bilingual citizens to aid them in this global economy. Our school is a Title 1 school where 60% of the students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, but that does not change the value they hold for reading and education in general!

My Project

My students need to be exposed to stories which could aid them in celebrating their own cultural roots, as well as other cultures and points of views that may or may not be present in their school or classroom. They need to read books about people who not only look like them or their classmates, but also people of different backgrounds. Essentially, I want my students to learn about all people who create change in one way or another and advocate for justice for themselves and others.

Bringing social justice into the classroom is what every teacher should be doing and I believe students can put themselves in others' shoes using all the books requested in this project, whether it be learning stories about immigration, individuals with disabilities, accomplishments of women, ssegregation and racism, people of different genders, diverse people overcoming adversity, etc.

What better way to do this than by having books readily available in our very own library?!

As my students are exposed to the lived experiences of diverse individuals, they will be able to develop an understanding of different stories and be exposed to history and information they might not have learned about yet. These books will help me create a classroom environment where we foster tolerance and promote acceptance not only in our classroom, but everywhere else I our world, too. Students will enjoy these books independently and read aloud. Oh, the possibilities!!
