Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to read about my project. I am in my fifth year as a certified Special Education teacher. This is my first year working in middle school. I love this age group and I feel as though I have found my home!
Building connections with each of my students, getting to know them, their needs and helping them grow in their understanding of social emotional and mental heath strategies is very important to me.
Middle school is a difficult time of transition for young people developmentally, emotionally and socially, more so than it was when I was in middle school in the 90's. Many students have experienced some form of trauma at home, at school or both.
To assist my students, I currently utilize breathing exercises, mindful journaling, deescalation techniques, identifying emotions and affirmations. I put in a lot of time, effort and energy into creating a safe, welcoming space for my students, with a sensory calming aesthetic such as calming music and modified lighting. I am often told by my peers when they enter my room, that there is a "vibe".
One of my 7th graders shares, "Ms. Reyna's class is my safe space, because when I feel down and I just need a safe space to let it all out and know that I will not be judged by the teacher or some of the students in the class, I go to Ms. Reyna."
I am a firm believer that things happen at the moment in time that they are supposed to happen. Being a certified yoga instructor has been a dream of mine for two decades. Upon completion of this program, I will be qualified to lead wellness classes for my students and my school community.
