This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Some students will be returning to school this year for the first time while others have been back in-person for a year. This environment will create a new set of learning opportunities for students as they transition back to in-person learning together and all students learn how to adapt to being both in the classroom and how to work with each other. Over the past year, I have noticed that one way to help ease this transition back to the classroom is to allow flexible seating and fidgeting at desks; these tools allow students to stay engaged in the learning and participate in classroom discussions while allowing an outlet for energy. Our class has worked to develop flexible seating options over the past year, and students took to those with structures in place. While we have grown our flexible seating options, our fidget resources are limited and there is currently not enough for more than 2 to 3 students to utilize a resource.

Our new goal is to create a fidget bin so that more students have different options to engage their fingers at their desks while still actively participating in class discussions and instruction.

Sometimes students just need a different outlet for their energy that the flexible seating cannot provide, and this is where the fidgets help to fill the gap. These tools also help to create a calming corner for students who might be experiencing an event that is out of their control and who need to take a quick pause during the day. Squeezing a stress ball while taking a few “belly breaths” can help center a student and allow them to refocus their mindset so that they can participate in the educational task that the class is focusing on.
