My Students

There is something special about the students in my school. These students are independent, protective, and eager. The students I work with daily come from very diverse cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. These students need support and rapport from the individuals who interact with them daily within the school community. Based on the high needs of these students, each school day can be challenging but rewarding.

Each student in my school is very eager to learn and to grow; however, with the challenges they face outside of the school, they need extra support within the school day.

My Project

Due to COVID-19 students have been exposed to more challenges in the past year than they probably have their entire life. With last year being as challenging as it was the need for Social Emotional support within the school is high. As the school guidance counselor for the upcoming school year, I will focus on the social-emotional needs of the students. Allowing students to express themselves and help them to cope with the challenges they have faced in the past year will allow students to begin to get back on the correct path towards learning and academic progress.

As educators we must first support students social-emotional needs and then their academic needs in this upcoming school year.

By the use of these resources our guidance department will be able to reach more students and allow more students to cope with all the emotions that last school year brought on. I will use these resources during small group lessons to teach students coping skills and strategies for anger management, social skills and mindfulness. The mentioned resources below including the Mad Smartz Card Game, The Growth Mindset Workbook and Anger Management Workbook are much needed resources for my guidance department to appropriately teach students to cope with their emotions that have been brought on from the inconsistency of life over the past year. I will use the fidget toys and the sound machine to allow students access to a calming environment to allow themselves to be accepting of the coping strategies taught using these resources. The resources will allow me to better target social-emotional needs in our students and effectively allow students to learn how to cope.
