My Students

I am an educator at an elementary school in one of the largest school districts in the nation. My elementary school has a diverse body of learners. The school in and of itself is unique in that it opened it's doors during the COVID pandemic. My students ended their 2019/2020 school year at one school and began their next school year, in the distance education model of learning, at a brand new school with new teachers and school-based staff.

The uncertainties of life during the COVID pandemic have lead to elevations in traumatic stress responses of our children.

This year has presented itself with a number of social and emotional wellness challenges for our students, as well as teaching staff, as we returned to the in-person model of learning and welcomed students to our beautiful campus.

Students who undergo traumatic experiences may present with difficulty forming attachments and relationships, impaired stress response systems, and difficulty identifying, expressing, and managing emotions.

My Project

My project is built on the CASEL Framework for applying SEL strategies in the school community. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.

The COVID pandemic has brought the need for explicit social emotional learning instruction to the forefront of all educators minds!

This project will outfit my school's Zen Wellness Room with the necessary tools to run small group, SEL classes to meet the social emotional needs of all students within our community.
