Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Living in an economically depressed community, my students tend to dream big. But they often doubt their achievements will help them reach true success. I am in their lives to help them achieve those dreams and help them find success each semester.

We are a Title I public school with over 80% economically challenged students school-wide.

Funding for our academic/arts programs must be built from sponsors and teachers who find resources throughout the year to raise money. We have not been allowed to fundraise this year due to social distancing.

This school year has been a daily challenge. My students are adapting to virtual learning, but it has definitely been an uphill battle.

My Project

Podcasts have become a popular virtual tool in the classroom to learn practically any topic. We would like to build a sound recording studio to begin recording and releasing a Mental Health channel at our school. Our school has been categorized as a Trauma School through the AWARE grant (Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education).

We want to increase awareness of mental health issues among school-aged youth by creating weekly episodes of Mental Health Mondays podcasts.

We hope to host meetings where students share their stories, films, music, and creative writing. Our goal is to connect school-aged youth, who may have behavioral health issues including serious emotional disturbance or serious mental illness with the help that they deserve. The AWARE grant has provided social workers at our school; however, many students tend to shy away from help due to the stigma that comes along with the term "social worker". We want to bridge our students to the wonderful resources our social workers can provide.

Students in my class just finished making documentaries about many topics that live in the world of mental health. After we completed our projects, many students opened up and asked for more projects that would help them grow through their struggles. Therefore, we hope to cover topics about violence, stress and anxiety, hunger and homelessness, coping techniques, invitations to our yoga classes, receiving therapy, and information to local agencies that are available for our students.

We have the wood building materials needed for the project and we have completed the framing our of 13'x15' recording studio. We are now asking for the sound equipment and soundproofing materials to complete our studio so that we can begin recording, editing, and publishing our weekly podcasts.
