Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual and learning disabilities, speech impairment, emotional disturbance, and autism spectrum disorder. They struggle processing information and teaching them using different modalities is extremely important to make sure I reach all of my students.

My students are first and second graders with both emotional, social and academic delays.

Most of my students are performing one to two grades below grade level, but are still expected to reach grade level common core standards as all other general education students. They are students that love learning but realize they are facing a challenge. Most of my students benefit from tactile and visual learning.

My Project

Our school this year we will be focusing on social-emotional learning. I will be integrating mindfulness, meditation and yoga in my classroom. My students have challenges in many areas of their lives and I hope to help them develop skills on how to deal with their emotions and frustrations.

The most effective way to teach my students about mindfulness and how to work through their emotions is with picture books.

With picture books we can introduce different situations in which they might find themselves and how to work through the problem.

These books will help me teach the children how to regulate their emotions and anger; promote focus; and become more purposeful in their actions and responses. These books will help my students how to listen to their body and regulate their emotions appropriately. These books will promote discussion between the students about their feelings and how to deal with them. I will be able to effectively teach my students what it means to be mindful; how to meditate through guided relaxing techniques; and activities such as yoga to give students tools to feel peaceful and mindful.
