My Students

I teach at a Title 1 school in San Diego and have the opportunity of teaching a very diverse group of students. We have grown together, learned together, struggled together, persevered together, laughed together, and yes even cried together. My school community includes a large population of Hispanic and Middle Eastern Refugees.

I want my students to know that I not only see their differences and needs, but understand and accept them as well.

They enter my classroom facing many obstacles. A lot of our students lack an interest in their education due to issues sometimes beyond their control. They come to class with little to no motivation and when I can not only understand them better but I can help THEM understand each other better it makes all the difference.

My Project

Students are excited whenever there is an opportunity to learn and share about themselves. By giving opportunities to let them understand that feelings of anger, frustration, jealousy, and depression are normal, students will feel less isolated and ostracized. This opportunity is two-fold: one, it will help students better recognize their own emotions and learn how to respond/cope with them; two, this will help me as a teacher better empathize and understand my students.

Teachers today, as many people know, wear many different hats.

However, I'm not sure how much the general public is aware of the social-emotional component of teaching. Not only are we expected to help students succeed academically, but we are also supporting the students that are struggling in the classrooms for reasons beyond academics. Many students come from backgrounds that make education second tier. They have obstacles in their lives, all of which are unique to them, and helping them get a better grasp on this is fundamental to their development.

Our district is striving to help students manage their social-emotional well-being and I want to take on the task full force.

Once a student has conquered their emotions, everything else comes so much easier. My goal is to help be the bridge between managing emotions and succeeding academically.
