My Project

Over the past two years my students have suffered greatly, socially and emotionally, and continue to do so in light of the residual effects of the pandemic. Despite the resilience of children, I find that the students are lacking in the ability to navigate social, emotional, and even academic challenges and situations. I am seeking support for my students in order to provide them with sensory and therapeutic tools that can help them to develop the necessary coping skills, whether they are experiencing crisis behavior, struggling emotionally, or are otherwise in distress.

Many of my students are learning to implement the strategies that best fit their individual needs.

Some of my students present with behavioral impairments, as well as learning disabilities, which can often trigger an emotional outburst.

My SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) Meditation room is designed to help my students feel secure and calm throughout the school day, and to facilitate the de-escalation of crisis behavior. My school’s emphasis is on addressing the SEL needs of our students, which promotes self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, etc. I utilize a mindfulness approach which focuses on a student's moment to moment awareness of what they are experiencing. It helps students to focus on their breathing, and become more keenly aware of themselves and their surroundings.

Being a Title 1 School presents its own challenges, as families are in need of the supports that can be provided by and during during the school day. Some of these items include an inflatable sensory pod, weighted blanket, a weighted therapeutic stuffed animal, a calm down tent, and a couch where they will be able to take breaks.
