Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our student population is 95% latino. Our students are immigrants or from immigrant families. Ninety-nine percent of our students receiving free lunch. Our school also has a large special education population. Our families spend a lot of their time working and aren't able to spend a lot of time with their children. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.

My Project

This year my students would greatly benefit from reading and learning about impulse control, understanding their feelings, and how to interact with one another in respectful and meaningful ways. Building a strong classroom community is crucial for all students to feel safe and learn. Safe classroom communities allow students to feel comfortable to make mistakes and express themselves without worrying about what students think or say.

My students face many obstacles in life.

Many of my students come to school not ready to learn because they are dealing with social-emotional issues. Students many times don't know how to name the issues they are dealing with. The books I have chosen for my project will help me address some of these issues in an engaging and interactive way. As a classroom community, we can talk about these issues with one another and allow students to understand the similarities they might face, and then work together to help each other.
