My Students

Starting school this hybrid year can be a challenging time for a kid, especially if you speak a different language. Students worry about who their teacher is, what friends they will make, how they will succeed in class subjects. As an English as a New Language teacher with 45 amazing New York City students, my job is to make ALL students feel safe and cared for so that they are able to learn in a nurturing environment- whether in person or remotely.

It is amazing to watch the students academically succeed and - more importantly - socially get along as they speak the language of kindness and friendship.

It is a beautiful thing to watch and guide throughout the school year.

My Project

My New York City school community is dealing with a lot of trauma this school year... which is an understatement. Queens Village in an area hit hard by the pandemic. That is why this year, supporting social emotional learning (SEL) EVERYDAY within my lessons is so important. For my English Language Learners, whether I am teaching them in person or remotely, art has been a way to unify us -despite the physical and social distance- to create a solid school community. Art also provides my students an outlet for expression. Having art resources delivered to my students, such as sketch books, colored pencils, oil pastels, and books will allow me to teach my SEL lessons and support my students.

To support students' social and emotional well-being, enhance their creativity and enlighten their spirit - each child will receive a packet of art supplies.

Students will create SEL projects using these art supplies as I will continue to teach language through the arts. We will explore artworks by artists through texts and create using the art supplies. Learning about Yayoi Kusama, we will use dot stickers and oil pastels to create installation trioramas. Keith Haring street art will encourage us to express ourselves in our sketchbooks. Augusta Savage's book will influence us to create clay masterpieces. Authors and artists Mo Willems and Dav Pilkey will inspire my students to make their own comics using colored pencils.

This school year, creating art has been something that allowed my students to feel emotionally successful as they socially connect with their peers. No matter their English language proficiency, art has been our unifying language. Art has helped to strengthen their voices. These supplies will allow my students to continue to create to express themselves, while feeling supported by the DonorsChoose community.
