Hi! In my inner-city New Haven school, emotions run high, but often without the lexicon needed to express them, seek help, and resolve the issue. By offering a Social Emotional Learning Night to families, we hope to deliver the words to the tongues of our students as well as their families, as this issue runs beyond the walls of the school and into the community. The evening we have in mind incorporates bonding activities, exercises in emotional awareness, games that promote social observation, and conversation-boosting circles that facilitate communication within the family unit and organically into the school community. Additionally, we are seeking resources that will allow our students to use this opportunity to better the community by integrating this learning with their general social interactions. SEL Night aims to empower students to take the lead in fostering community engagement. By requesting materials such as board games, craft supplies, and interactive learning tools, students will have the resources they need to facilitate engaging and inclusive activities. This hands-on approach not only promotes leadership skills but also encourages creativity and teamwork among students as they guide their peers and community members through an evening of hands on activities and engagement.
