My Students

This is my very first year as a school counselor at my current location! I have been an educator for the past 28 years. This year I am working hard for students in NEVADA to help them overcome the social and emotional setbacks that have been brought on from more than a year of a pandemic. I am seeing more anxiety, depression, anger, and family issues than ever before. My goal is to bring support and relief to these students!

This school is filled with hardworking student that are enthusiastic about learning, but socially and emotionally many of them are struggling.

I believe that a big part of my job is to help them heal, spread positivity, and support them through this difficult transition.

My Project

I am so excited about this project and the potential it has to make a huge impact on so many students at my school. A microphone portable system with music will help make social events and clubs more fun and exciting for all. All of the books I've chosen will be used in my classroom counseling lessons for the entire school as well as in group counseling sessions! The calming items such as fidget toys, squishy toys, playdough, lamp, and bubbles will be used with students struggling with anxiety and depression, and used as calming tools. The jars will be used throughout the school to promote kindness and respect as we get used to working in person again. Finally, the workbooks I've chosen will directly assist me with focused counseling groups such as self-regulation, mindfulness, anger management, anxiety, and mingle cards for conversation starters to improve discourse.

These resources will help me reach the goal of the five SEL Competencies which are self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, relationship skills, and social awareness.

Here are just some of the specific standards for K-5:

1.ME.K.1 Identify different emotions.

1.ME.1.1 Recognize the relationship between emotions and actions. (Per NRS 389.520)

1.ME.2.1 Describe how the body responds to emotions physically and behaviorally. (Per NRS 389.520)

(3)1.1 Identify characteristics of physical, mental, emotional, and social health behaviors.

1.ME.4.1 Identify physical and psychological responses to stressors. (Per NRS 389.520)

1.ME.5.1 Compare the causes, symptoms, and effects among stress, anxiety, sadness, and depression. (Per NRS 389.520)

Every resource that I am requesting will be directly used to bring students together, in small groups, class lessons, and one on one counseling sessions to improve and support their social/emotional growth which will benefit their academic achievement and help them reach their goals!
