This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Hi! I’m Ms. Lopez and starting the 24-25 school year I will be the teacher in an early special education program (Preschool for all Learners). PALs consists of 3-5 year old students with mild to severe disabilities. I envision creating a calm classroom environment with many tools for my students to feel safe, and to support verbal and non verbal students in their social emotional development.

Preschoolers have strong feelings just like adults, and students who are developing language skills have difficulty expressing themselves and often need support to self regulate and understand emotions.

A cozy calming corner needs a soft base such as rubber tiles that can be easily cleaned for children's hygiene. Along with a tent for a defined calm space. A calming corner can not be complete without pillows for cushioning and comfort. I also plan to implement social emotional learning tools through out the classroom. Yoga is a great way to start the day with calming breaths and stretches. Yoga mats will help define the space and time. Social emotional board books are a great addition to refer to and can be placed in a library and calming tent. Sensory tubes is a great tool that students can use to help sooth when upset or overwhelmed. An aquarium lap pad can be used to support sensory needs when a student is overwhelmed or needs support to attend learning groups. Feeling and Dough Mats and Big Feeling Pineapple is a fun way to not only teach about emotions but also work on fine motor skills.

Social emotional learning will support students in making positive relationships with peers, teachers, parents, and most importantly themselves. It is a long life skill that can be introduced and taught in a fun, age appropriate manner to preschoolers with all needs.
