My Project

I am a first year teacher teaching Special Ed high school math. My students all have varying needs and unique qualities, which makes my classes diverse and oftentimes--challenging. I would like to create a space in my classroom so that students who need a brain break, or students with math anxiety can have a place to unwind and relax. Currently, I have bare walls and the space isn't inviting.

A social emotional corner could be a place where my students can regroup and/or relax when finishing a challenging task.

An SEL corner will also help create a welcoming environment and will change my class ecology. My students would benefit from this space because it would give them an area in the room for them to take a break from a rigourous lesson, or as a reward for finishing early. Money from this project would fund making the corner more inviting to students. In addition to the rug which would be used to section off the area, I would hang positive affirmation posters/pictures for students on the wall. On another wall I could create a WORD WALL specific to the lesson. The sensory fidgit toys and painting rocks would be for my more challenging students with anxiety or ADHD.
