My Project

Following Covid, and even before, many of my students were having trouble navigating the social media world and its ever growing presence and reliance in their lives. Mental health is imperative for them. As they are growing as the amazing people my kids are, they are learning to navigate themselves in a public world while having to figure out the intricacies of social skills and communication in both their public and private lives.

As our world is becoming more virtual, I need to create a way to communicate as much as I can face to face with them even if I can't always see them in person so they have access to safe spaces!

To create as much access and relationship building to me in times I am not immediately there, having a monitor with a camera/speaker and docking station to support it, allows me to live stream with them when needed, as well as create videos and interactive experiences related to their growth- socially, through career and college planning, advocating and so forth.

In the times I am there, I want to continue to provide a safe space where they can decompress. Often I do art therapy with them while they snack in a safe place away from their peers. Having a microwave gives them access to whole foods and real meals, and the coloring book is something I can copy to make accessible time and time again while they have fresh markers to use in the decompressing activity. I have noticed that this is becoming more and more frequent and having a place to belong increases their ability to self regulate, increases their self esteem and has a nice side effect to their academic performance.
