Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the privilege of working with students as a school counselor in the Morrisania section of the Bronx, NY. This low-income residential neighborhood is filled with students bursting with talent, creativity, energy and passion to explore the rest of the world that extends beyond the Bronx. Unfortunately, many of my students are currently living in challenging situations. For example, many are currently living in shelters, others are doubled-up with extended families, some are undocumented and are feeling uncertain about their future, while many others have had to make the transition into foster care. To make matters more complex, COVID-19 hit without warning and created a great deal of stress for my students; who were already dealing with extrenuating circumstances.

My position as a school counselor affords me the opportunity to empower my students to move forward with a positive mind-set for social-emotional success; despite the obstacles they face daily.

My Project

My students require lots of social-emotional support. What better way to help their social-emotional development, than through technology, books, worksheets, gameboards, arts and crafts, sensory toys, prizes, and things they can listen to for relaxation e.g. white noise sound machine.

Through the use of these activities and materials, my students will be able to self-regulate their emotions.

My goal is to create a safe, fun space that students can enjoy each day, while simultaneously fostering their social-emotional growth. Please help me to provide my students the social-emotional supports they need through your donations.
