Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I have the privilege of working with elementary school students through individual and group counseling sessions, as well as classroom lessons, and school wide initiatives. My students are amazing young kids who are learning how to identify and handle their emotions, develop positive risk taking/positive coping strategies, practicing social skills, as well developing a Growth Mindset to be successful both in and outside of their classrooms. My students are continuing to work on fostering skills related to social cognition, empathy, perspective taking, impulse control, and planning skills. Bibliotherapy has proven to be a great way to help teach students about essential life skills in a way that is fun but also relatable to their own experiences.
My Project
Exploring Social Emotional Development through play and literacy. My hope is to expand my students' opportunities to develop social emotional awareness through play therapy. Often times within my counseling sessions I do my best to include literacy by reading stories with my students that explore a common emotion we all experience. We will then transition into a craft or play activity to explore those feelings.
With resources such as the emotions themed Legos my students will not only build their social emotional awareness, but they will also develop other essential life skills such as: team work, conversational skills, visual-spatial development, executive functioning, problem solving, planning, self-regulation skills, and so much more!
The related guidebooks will allow me to also expand my creativity in how I can use these resources with students both in counseling & through classroom lessons. My hope is to enter more classrooms & assist staff in developing emotions themed centers for their students during academic times, such as math centers & reading centers. I've learned over the years the benefits & importance of tying in Social Emotional Learning with students throughout their school day. These materials will be tremendous assets in my ability to reach more students in a creative way that facilitates growth and emotional understanding.
Additionally, incorporating play (with the carnival related games) will allow for a fun & safe way in which students can practice developing a Growth Mindset (accepting when we lose, thinking about the size of the problem, being happy for our friends or others, & exploring emotions). Within my building we do a lot with a program known as Zones of Regulation. In this program their are four colors (blue, green, yellow, & red) which incorporate different emotions. I will use these games to tie in the Zones & coping tools.
