Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My caseload is made up of thirty wonderful students in grades kindergarten through fifth. The students I work with come from very diverse backgrounds with many different cultures represented. About 90% of the students are English language learners and speak a different language at home. Communication is a foundation for daily life; however, many of my students lack the basic skills to express themselves and find daily academic and social task challenging. Due to the fact that a significant amount of my students are learning English as a second language, often they lack the basic sound-letter correspondence, do not have basic reading skills, have a limited vocabulary and struggle to comprehend information. Additionally, a significant number of the students come from low-income households. My students work hard every day, and I am constantly looking for new ways to get them engaged in lessons and expose them to new experiences!

My Project

I am hoping to get funding to attend this conference so I can learn strategies to build resilience in my school community by helping the students developing social-emotional awareness.

Social-emotional learning is key in order for students to develop many important life skills, such as, having awareness of their own emotions, making responsible decisions, showing respect for others and developing strong relationships.

My students come from very diverse backgrounds and some experience difficult circumstances in their home environment; because of this a lot of my students have never been taught the social-emotional skills they need to manage challenging situations. Often these difficulties even prevent them from accessing the material that is being presented in the classroom. I am hoping that after this conference I will have gained skills that will be helpful when teaching my students how to deal with conflict, how to manage their emotions and how to develop healthy relationships with peers and adults.
