Help me give my students tools, resources, strategies and games for social and emotional learning to allow them to do their best in school! With my guidance as a school counselor, these tools can be modeled.
I am the only elementary school counselor in a school of 450 students. Many students struggle to get through the school day due to friendship issues, family struggles, lack of social skills, anxiety, sensory needs, ADHD, stress and pressure to do well and other issues that they are dealing with. I use a variety of resources to help students learn how to cope, focus and deal with their stressors. At the elementary level, this is done with games, books, sensory toys and hand held fidgets or weighted stuffed animals. I have a calming corner in my room that students can utilize during the school day. In that area, things like fidgets, weighted stuff animals, hand held marble mazes and picture books are utilized. Students who need more support might use situation cards with me to role play scenarios together to give them practice to try strategies on their own. In the school setting, I provide quick counseling techniques so that they can get back to classroom learning. The 15 minute counseling techniques book will be amazing. Therapeutic games are also extremely helpful because they are quick and allow students to learn and name strategies to self regulate their emotions. Similarly, reading stories is developmentally appropriate for their age, either reading to themselves or having me read it to them. I would love to provide my students with these resources to expand their toolbox of coping strategies. With this support, they will be able to attend completely to their studies and learning. This is for lifelong learning! When students learn and use these tools with me individually, in a small group or in a whole group lesson, they take away strategies they use not only at school, but with their families.
