Social Distanced Coding with Screencast

Help me give my students the ability to screencast their programming projects to our smartboard for sharing their apps to get feedback and debugging support from classmates while remaining in safe proximity to one another with social distancing.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At our school, a New York City public school in the Bronx, I teach AP Computer Science and Intro to programming to high school seniors. My students have responded really well to the curriculum and we have increased our level of participation in these courses over the last 4 years.

In my AP CS course last year, we doubled enrollment to two full sections.

Seeing people that my students can connect with represented in my physical classroom space and curriculum is key. Last year we celebrated that 66% of my students who took my AP CS class identify as female, 71% identify as Hispanic/Latinx, 26% identify as Black, and 3% identify as Asian. In my curriculum, we are focusing on social justice in tech, what it means to be a digital citizen and what the inalienable rights of digital citizens should be.

In my Intro to programming elective, my students learn JavaScript and how to draw and animate on the computer, culminating in an animated short film festival, in the winter. My students also learn HTML & CSS in the Spring and create dynamic web pages using adobe creative suite and other web builders.

My Project

Returning this fall, my AP Computer Science students will have to adhere to strict social distance guidelines. Something that has been immensely powerful in my classroom in the past has been group-based code reviews for constructive feedback and debugging as students design and build apps and websites.

An Apple TV will enable me to set up direct screencast support to our class smartboard from all devices in my room to enable these code reviews to continue to happen but in a safe way.

Peer review is a wonderful growth and learning opportunity and enables me to have more collaborative computer science projects. Thanks so much for your consideration!
