Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic kids eager to learn. Over 90% of our students come from low-income households. A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless, living in garages or multiple families in one residence. My kids' parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, our children still want to create, read, write, and learn!

My students worry about coming to school and staying safe; and yet, they still want to come to school to explore, learn and grow.

I am teaching online and trying to meet my students' needs emotionally, as well as academically, during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science and social studies.

My Project

The pandemic has taken its toll on us. We are tired and scared and worried. Children see these fears in adults and on television, and they feel them, too. My students are worried. They are looking to us for assurance and guidance.

With these literacy kits, I hope to boost early literacy and social-emotional skills by bringing kindness and friendship stories to life!

I hope to build positive feelings of self and teach compassion for others.

These books tell stories of helping, sharing and building friendships. These kits have washable, soft-sewn storytelling pieces, plus a treehouse, bucket and classroom that fit all the pieces of the stories inside. With my students, we will be able to act out the stories and explore important themes, such as kindness, friendship, diversity and self-awareness.

I will use the jumbo people shapes to help my students to see themselves as they are and to be proud of their color and race. My students will decorate them to represent themselves and share who they are with each other. My students are beautiful and I am so proud of them. These books and kits will help me to teach my students about the beauty of being kind, caring and thoughtful. Thank you for considering my grant for your donation.
