My students are a part of a large rural primary school in South Carolina. Our school houses approximately 700 students in grades 4K-2nd grade. All of the students in our school receive free breakfast and lunch. Our community is a small, farming community and most students are not able to venture far outside of our community and neighboring city - which is about 10 minutes away.
Our students come to school seeking resources and materials that they may not have access to at home.
As a reading teacher, I strive to provide my students with as many opportunities as possible and that includes access to high quality reading and literacy materials. I also strive to ensure I’m providing a positive environment where students feel safe taking risks in learning something new.
My Project
Many of our students are struggling in our current world of hybrid/virtual/face to face learning. We find ourselves feeling more alone than ever or we find it difficult to deal with our feelings.
Many times our students may not even be able to put their feelings into words and books can often help us find the words we need to verbalize how we're feelings.
There are many wonderful books available today that can help our students understand and state their feelings and I want them to be able to relate to characters in books that might be feeling like they are.
These books will be read aloud to students who are face to face for learning as well as students who remain virtual. While reading these books, we will be able to discuss our feelings as well as learn ways to be kind to others.
