My Project
Greetings to you all from Houston, Texas. I am the counselor of a middle school in the inner city and I am seeing a need in our students that I am requesting assistance in fulfilling. In addition to helping our students improve in the area of academics, there is also a great need to target their social and emotional needs. I am often tasked with getting a student focused and calmed so that they are able to continue learning. I believe that providing them with an area that includes a therapeutic environment will assist in these efforts.
I would like to prepare a room that will be designated to a calming experience.
This room will contain visual, auditory and tactile stimuli such as fidgets, calming cubes and even feet wigglers, that will allow the students to relieve stress and learn calming techniques. Students need to feel comfortable and relaxed when they are in great stress. Having alternative seating such as bean bags, chairs, balance balls and floor seating will provide an environment conducive to mental and emotional wellness. The floor puzzle and hopscotch rugs will be used to provide a fun and educational place to sit. Finally, LED lights have been used by medical professionals to treat depression and other psychological disorders, and this will be a great benefit to my students in this current climate of childhood distress. My hope is that this room will help my students develop skills that can be used outside of school to enhance their well-being and self-awareness. When they are in an area of extreme overstimulation and stress, I'm hoping to provide a safe space for them to regroup and create a healthier environment for themselves and others.
