My project is designed to use art projects to build social and emotional competency in student. I am an elementary school counselor at a small rural school in Arkansas. The students at our school are primarily economically disadvantaged. Due to COVID 19, our students have demonstrated a greater need for social and emotional learning. Our elementary has made a commitment to improve our school culture and make our school a safe environment for all students.
One way we chose to improve school culture was to use Friday afternoons as Club Friday.
We divide our middle school students up into groups of 10 - 12 students and allow them to participate in high interest clubs led by teachers. My club is called Mustang Strong. In Mustang Strong we focus on social skills such as respect, kindness, cooperation, self-esteem building, anti-bullying, friendships, and empathy. I use arts and crafts to engage students in social/emotional lessons geared toward improving our school culture.
The students who participate in Mustang Strong will use the materials requested to make slime, stress balls, and create many student art projects aimed at promoting social/emotional skills and developing a more positive school culture. The art work they create will be used to build the social and emotional skills in the younger students in our school as our middle school students share their social/emotional competency with the younger students in our school.
