My Students

This group of students are 6-8th graders who all have severe special needs, including but not limited to both cognitive and physical disabilities. However, even though they are students with disabilities, they are all able and willing to participate in sports, specifically soccer.

This year, the students and myself decided to put together a special needs soccer program within our District 75 school.

These students learn through movement. The ultimate goal while participating in soccer is increasing interpersonal and socio-emotional social skills while laughing and enjoying one another. Giving our students opportunities to engage while moving offers them opportunities like their general education peers.

While all of these students have multiple disabilities, they understand they are different. The importance of them engaging in all of the same activities as their general education peers is exceptionally important to the students themselves, their families and our entire organization.

My Project

Soccer Strikers, the name of our team, chosen by the students. Each student selected on their own to participate on this soccer team. Our students will be following a specific soccer curriculum tailor-made for students with special needs. The students will be practicing 3 times per week offering them many opportunities to increase appropriate interpersonal and socio-emotional social skills. These soon-to-be soccer players are well aware of their physical abilities and would like to participate in the sport of soccer just like their same-aged general education peers.

The ultimate goal is that each week the curriculum builds off of each skill, ultimately increasing each students' skill-set while preparing them all to compete in a match against other students with special needs.
