Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Exercise and movement are not only important for our health but also a must for our minds.

My classroom is composed of 80% English learning students, who live in a low income community with an infrastructure made up of mostly apartment complexes that lack enough room for kids to run and play.

Also, safety is an issue in their community as it is not safe for them to play outdoors because of the high crime rate. This leaves our school campus as the nearest safe alternative for them to be able to exercise in.

My Project

Soccer is a sport of high interest to this student population, and what a better way to get everyone moving and involved, both girls and boys, than in a sport where they will build skills that will help them be better team players? This sport will allow for students to build self confidence as they learn how to play the game. Students will also have an opportunity to improve on their social skills through empathy and negotiation as they learn how to play with one another.

Exercise will not only instill better life habits but also the ability to focus in the classroom, as endorphins are released through the physical activity.

My students' emotional, physical and mental state will improve through movement and therefore affect their academic progress as they return to the classroom ready to learn.
