My Students

My students love the magic in learning. I am the Arts Coordinator/Coach at a school in Brooklyn. We have students in 6:1:1, 8:1:1, and 12:1:1 classroom settings across 5 school sites throughout Brooklyn. Our students are diagnosed with Autism, Speech or Language Impairment, Down Syndrome, and multiple disabilities. Additionally, they have diverse communication needs where some students require the the use of a device to communicate. There are students who use echolalia which means they repeat phrases heard and have difficulty expressing own thoughts. Some of my students have minimal verbal skills where they only babble, some speak in 2-3 word sentences, and some speak in full sentences.

Our students are always motivated to learn when lessons/activities are engaging, applicable in real life, and hands on.

They especially love read alouds, art activities, and are so happy to participate and help their friends problem solve. To maintain their engagement and facilitate an understanding of learning concepts, they require visuals, clear and bright appealing pictures, hands-on activities, games, and big picture books, and items to meet their sensory needs.

My Project

We currently have 4 art teachers spread across our school sites. Out students thrive through creative means to express themselves. Art presents a valuable way for them to do this. Students can use modeling clay to create sculptures and representations of real life images. This can help them make connections to vocabulary and promote building speech. The canvas' will be used to create water colour and pastel artwork through our school art curriculum. The brushes and paper will also aid in helping them create these art pieces. At the end of the school year, we will be hosting an Art Gallery where we will display all of the students' art work throughout the five school sites. We hope to beautify our school with all of the fantastic artwork the students create this year.
