As we learn more about how the brain works and learns to read, we need to change our practices. Research shows that about 30% of students learn to read with any method of teaching, 50% of students learn to read when they have explicit and direct instruction in foundational skills. 15% need more time and more support, and 5% will always struggle because of a learning disability. I have been teaching those last 20% how to read as older students who didn't learn when 80% of their peers did.
My students are inquisitive when I teach the phonics rules and ask "Why doesn't a particular word follow the pattern?," and I don't always have the answer.
I instead say things like "English is a hard language to learn.
I want to be able to give them the words that do follow the patterns to increase their practice and give them the reasons why certain words don't follow the rules. These books will help me deepen my understanding and prepare me for the answers to my students' ever-inquiring minds. There are four books that will give me all the words that follow the phonetic pattern and other books that help me understand how English works in order to teach my students who struggle how to be better readers.
