Help Mr. W.

Our school serves elementary through high school students who have made bad choices and were expelled from their home school. Our mission is to teach students to make better choices, respect themselves and others, and to give them the education they need to be successful in school and in life.

Most of our students come from extreme poverty. They have had poor role models or have been left to fend for themselves most of the time. The result is a cynical and uncaring attitude toward life and their future. Many students are at risk for gang recruitment.

We need to provide positive role models for our students. To do this, our school is developing a mentoring program based on small clubs built around staff hobbies or interests. If students share that interest they may join that club. In this way small groups of students can interact with staff members outside the normal school and classroom routines. The clubs will also act as incentives for good behavior. Developing a skill or interest will expand the students' horizons and give them a more positive and hopeful outlook. I taught myself to play guitar when I was 12. I have found playing several styles of guitar to be an enriching and therapeutic hobby. I have also worked to develop my song writing and performing ability. I would like to teach students to play guitar to give them the opportunity to develop their talents and skills. The club will also provide a forum for them to jam and share original compositions as their skills develop. Within this framework of common interests, I believe I will be able to have a positive impact. An electric guitar and amp pack would capture student interest and encourage participation.

You will help students develop respect for themselves and others by giving them the opportunity to learn and develop a skill. This skill will be the source of a more positive self image. Learning to use and care for an instrument properly will also help students learn self control and respect for public property and the property of others. Developing a positive self image will help empower students to make good choices. This will immunize them against gang recruitment and help them realize they have other options in life besides criminal activity. A hopeful attitude will increase their interest in school and their efforts to meet graduation requirements.
