This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember that feeling, of hearing your parent read your favorite story as you are tucked into bed? That excitement the first time you tried to read it yourself? I want to foster that love of books, love of reading, love of learning in my classroom, where books are familiar and exciting.

Due to the socio-economic situation of many of my students, getting read to at night is a hope and not a reality.

Our student population is 94% below poverty line, most on welfare. We are 80% non-native English speakers, and we struggle with a high preponderance of other social challenges: parent illiteracy, domestic violence, homelessness, lack of access to technology, and family disengagement from school. Our school has struggled over the years to match the performance of schools in other neighborhoods. We are in our 3rd year as a Turnaround school, and are making great progress with the student body, but there is still a lot left to do. At every grade-level, we are pushing as hard as we can to assure that no child is "left behind" and that each child leaves with the skills they need to succeed in life.

My Project

Over the years I have spent thousands of dollars of my own money to acquire a classroom library that engages students. Books about just about any topic can be found in one corner of another. Students love being able to browse, and choose something that interests them. I would like to use this rolling book cart, because it is a convenient and versatile way to store books. With pre-divided bins, I no longer need to buy baskets for each category, and the rolling wheels mean that I can easily move it around the classroom as we need it.

I know it is just a piece of furniture, but the features of this book shelf will make our daily life that much easier.

The less time I spend moving things or organizing, means more time spent working with struggling learners. Plus, the easier books are to find, the more likely a child will pick it up and read it!
