Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are a diverse group of boys and girls with amazing personalities that blow us away every day. Our students live in the heart of a bustling urban center. They are primarily African-American and Latino. We are a special needs public school. We have students from all over our city who attend some of our special programs.

All of my students have special needs, many are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or Multiple Disabilities.

Their communication skills range from non-verbal to just needing a few pragmatic tweaks. They are learning to communicate in their own ways as they learn not only life skills but academics as well. Some of our student also have feeding needs.

My Project

Many of our student use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices to communicate with the world. Many of our students use high tech AAC with an AAC app. They use many different apps, but one thing most of them have in common is that the apps are downloaded onto iPads. These iPads are only used as their communication device.

Our tech team gives the students their AAC devices and charges, however, the chargers stay home, leaving us with no way to charge them in school.

There are times that the students devices use up their charge during the day and we need to recharge them. If one goes out in a classroom, often a teacher uses their own charger. There are times were multiple iPads lose their charge at the same time. That is when it becomes a struggle to balance all of them. Some classrooms have up to 6 AAC devices being used by students.

I want to provide each classroom in our school with a charging station for all of the devices. This way multiple devices can be charged at once. This prevents teachers from having to decide whose device should take priority, being able to charge them long enough, struggling to find a charger, and/or causing wear and tear on their own chargers.
