My Students

Our students are firing back into school after more than a year of learning over a computer. They are hungry for discussion and are thrilled about the prospect of reading 'real' books, some subtly thrilled and others outwardly. Most of our 10th graders are stepping foot inside our school for the first time in their high school career. Crazy! Our course team is working hard to create a community and a sense of belonging for our 10th graders.

My Project

Each quarter students select a book they want to read independently and they are grouped with students who want to read the same book. Students are asked to read the books mostly on their time; however, they discuss the book with their group. We are lacking non-fiction books in our collection, and we need your help to remedy this problem.

Our goal is to get students to read more and then work and discuss collaboratively with others.

We also find that students make new and different friends based on their book choices. The love (or frustration) of a book can bring us together, right?!

Reading and being responsible for bringing information back to a group also helps our students with self-managing themselves.
