My Students

Please help my 23 kindergarten students get a new rug that will provide plenty of space for us when we gather and learn as a group. A spacious and comfy new rug will facilitate a positive learning environment by eliminating distractions and providing each student with individual space.

We are a Title I school in Washington State with over five hundred students.

We have a large number of students from the culture of poverty and at risk populations, along with a high transiency rate. Specifically, 74% of our population receives Free or Reduced-Rate lunch and are of diverse ethnic backgrounds. My students are very excited and eager to learn. I believe that all students deserve to have a well-informed teacher who develops lessons and environments that will enhance and have the greatest impact on their development. As an educator it is my responsibility to do what I can to stay current with best practices that provide effective instructional strategies to reach all learning styles in the best environment possible.

My Project

This rug will help students focus their learning, build a caring classroom community, and teach children personal space. We begin our morning routine with a Morning Meeting at the carpet area. This routine brings students and teacher together in a circle to greet one another, share and respond to each other's news, to think together, to play together, and to look forward to the events in the day ahead. These meetings build community, create a climate of trust, and increases students' confidence and investment in learning. This routine also gives children daily practice in respectful communication. Throughout the day many lessons and activities take place at the carpet area and is an essential component to student learning in our classroom. Students find it difficult to identify their own personal space and respect that of others. I am requesting this donation to purchase a rug with clearly defined spaces that each student will be assigned to.

With support from this donation my students will have a comfortable spot everyday to learn the importance of personal space.

Having this rug will eliminate distractions and facilitate a more productive learning environment. School budgets are not sufficient to make personal space carpets available in kindergarten classrooms. The only opportunity to get this type of learning tool is to pursue support and donations for these types of programs
