My Students

"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms...children need to move," said Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children. My students move around our classroom to learn best and be creative.

We have nineteen hard-working girls in our fourth grade classroom with a range of ability levels and backgrounds.

Our elementary school is located in a small town in South Carolina. It is my passion to teach my students in the way that they learn best, and they need the freedom move when they get restless to help spark their creative minds. They inspire me every day with their creativity, and I want to foster this as much as possible.

My Project

My students need a classroom carpet as a space in our room to learn, explore, and grow. We will use this area rug every day from the beginning to the end. Each day in our classroom begins with a "morning meeting" where the student of the week leads the class in the classroom pledge, morning message, and a team-building activity. This is one of my favorite parts of the day with my girls because it builds community and sets the positive tone for the day. Having a front carpet would give my students a meaningful place to gather together for morning meetings. Throughout the day, my students could sit on the front carpet during math and reading stations, cooperative groups, independent and partner reading, writing, and whole group read-aloud time.

I think of my mighty girls as my own, and together we are like a family.

This front carpet would allow my students not only to grow independently but also closer together as a group. It gives them a place to write creatively, dive into a new book, solve problems with a group, or have whole group community building. Having a space to call their own would promote creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and community. These life skills will prepare them for the future!
